The city of Potsdam
Potsdam Stadt

Potsdam is because of many things, the pearl in the "Sandbox Brandenburg". Today the state capital of the state of Brandenburg and former residence of Prussian kings, Potsdam shows the visitor Prussia's Glory - and many more.

In the seventh century seat of a Slavonic fortification, Potsdam was first mentioned in 993rd. In the 12th century the city was conquered and from then it belonged to the Mark Brandenburg.

1345 the town was awarded a town charter and Potsdam remained the next centuries a small market town. This changed with the rise of Prussia as a major power: From the 17th century and the structural rise of the city, the one still can track at numerous attractions today, began. The status of residence of the Prussian kings was lost in 1918 during the downfall of the Empire.

In addition to the castle and Park Sanssouci Potsdam is also known by other parks. Very nice is the one created in the style of an English garden in the late 18th century New Garden, situated in the north of Potsdam between two lakes. Also the Park Babelsberg (with the same name Castle), the wildlife park, the Friendship Island and other make a visit worthwhile.

Potsdam is blessed with over 20 lakes nearby and next to Sanssouci with sixteen (!) other castles. Among beautiful buildings such as the New Palace, the Babelsberg Castle or the Marble Palace in the New Garden. Sign of well-Prussian tolerance are also a total of 39 churches in and around the city.

Finally Potsdam has to offer as a former garrison town and colonists various residential area, evidence of the military past as the former military school or military orphanage hospital. Many plants and places, mansions and museums, sculptures and paintings - too much to list everything, but more than enough to discover.

Should not be forgotten in the list, the Babelsberg Film Studios, one of the largest in Europe, as well as the large city gates, including not having the same name in Berlin to be confused Brandenburg Gate.

In short: Potsdam grants its visitors an insight into the Prussia of bygone days. And that on a hearts and minds equally appealing way.
